KAREL APPEL

The Netherlands, 1921 – Switzerland, 2006

Untitled, 1971

Mixed media on canvas: strings, paper and acrylic. Signed and dated on the lower right side, Appel 1971.

Known for his figurative abstractions, Appel often employed expressive colours and forms. This painting shows his rejection of sophisticated aesthetic styles and the inspiration he drew from children’s artworks. This work lacks rationalism and geometric abstraction, an intrinsic element of Appel’s figurative approach, allowing us to use our ‘irrational’ creativity to assign a meaning to the painting.

Together with a certificate of authenticity from the Karel Appel Foundation, Harriet de Visser, 20 June 2006.

Dimensions:

90 x 116 cm / 35.4 x 45.7 in
